About the appeal
Ten years ago, the experts claimed that the Orangutan would be extinct in the wild. Ten years on and although the future of the Orangutan remains far from secure, the Nyaru Menteng Sanctuary is now in its tenth year, ten years in November 2009 in fact, when the project opened its gate to the first orphans rescued from the illegal pet trade. The temporary safety of Nyaru Menteng is all they have right now. The lawn is a symbol of the hope this home holds for these 600+ wild and orphaned orangutans of the rainforest who instead of learning from their mothers in the wild, now find themselves in the company of others who have suffered the same fate and learning from each other and their surrogate parents, local Dayak women who treat them with the same care and love as they would their own.
Every day, at 3pm, the orphans return from Forest School for a couple of hours of play and interaction before feeding and turning in for the night. The photo demonstrates how the project has grown and the continued need for funding to support its operations until we can get the Orangutans, wild and rehabilitated back to safe habitat.
We hope you will donate and show your support for Nyaru Menteng and its achievements in saving some many innocent lives that would otherwise have fallen victim to the destruction of their rainforest home.
